My new approach to reaching B is to journey from A to not-A.

When I think about my journey, I usually focus on moving from point A to point B—taking action, moving forward, and reaching goals. But I've realized I never really stopped to think about the space between those points. This "in-between" space has become very important for my personal growth.

What is the ‘not-A’?

What we look at reveals us, but what we choose to not look at creates us.

Recently, I came across an intriguing concept while reading a book that resonated deeply with me. It reminded me of my own experience practicing meditation at a 10-day camp in Bogor, Indonesia. The idea is simple yet profound: "What we look at reveals us, but what we choose to not look at creates us."

Think about how our eyes work. When we're not looking at one thing, it means our eyes must now see something else. As our brain focuses on something new, it creates a different state and combines it with our past experiences into a novel experience. This principle applies to meditation as well. The goal of meditation is not to connect the dots but rather to empty your mind. It's not about connecting point A to point B, but about putting yourself in a state of not-A.

The goal of meditation is not to connect the dots but rather to empty your mind.

The Benefits of Stepping Away

Choosing to look away places me in the "not-A" space. This approach has lessened the impact of my current assumptions on my perceptions. It’s a space where I can create room for new possibilities. It allows me to embrace uncertainty, take risks, and explore new ways of thinking. By doing so, I can reconsider my path to point B and open up new opportunities for myself.

But what should I do in the 'not-A' space? Should I just shut myself down? (Just kidding—that's not the right solution.)

Actively Observe

Seeing point B is not enough. It's essential to truly understand and appreciate what I am observing. I take time to reflect on my observations and consider how my actions fit into the larger picture for B and C. Well, C might be another thing to consider, and nothing is perfect. You may not know the answer, but at least you understand why you do what you do.

Ask the Right Questions While Wearing Many Different Hats

One way to approach a task is to ask myself the right questions while wearing many different hats. For example, I could put on my "customer hat" and think about how a customer might feel about the task. Then, I could put on my "manager hat" and consider how to delegate the task to others. Next, I could put on my "creative hat" and think about new and innovative ways to approach the task.

Admit What You Don't Know and Ask Questions

Admitting what you don't know and seeking help from mentors or collaborators with the right skills can expand your understanding and capabilities, leading to a wiser move to point B. This mindset has helped me significantly, making me braver and more willing to put myself in the position of not knowing. I strive to be honest about my weaknesses and take them as opportunities to learn and grow both personally and professionally.

Embracing Uncertainty: A Path to Growth

Stepping into uncertainty by embracing the 'not-A' is not just a concept; it's a transformative practice that has enriched my life. It has allowed me to break free from the linear progression of simply going from A to B and instead explore a more holistic and enriching journey.

Next time we meet, you gotta tell me your C! 😄

Book Recommendation:

For those interested in delving deeper into this concept, I highly recommend reading Deviate. It offers insightful perspectives on how stepping away from our usual paths can lead to unexpected and fulfilling discoveries.

Embrace the unknown, and watch how it shapes you into who you are meant to be.

Next time when I see you, you gotta tell me your C :P
