"No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted." - Aesop
🤔
We are often told to be careful of strangers. BUT what if strangers are the key of the best travel experiences? Have you ever been lost, only to be rescued by the kindness of a stranger?

I have, more times than I can count. And each time, it's a reminder that the world is a far more welcoming place than we often give it credit for. For me, it's the unexpected moments, the genuine connections with people, that truly make a journey unforgettable. Sure, the landmarks are great, but it's the kindness of strangers in far-flung corners of the world that has really shaped my adventures.

The Unexpected Stories

It's often said that travel is the best education. And while I've certainly learned from books and museums, some of my most profound lessons have come from the simple act of connecting with strangers. It's in those moments, when you're a bit lost, a bit vulnerable, that the kindness of strangers shines through (aiya so memorable). Let me share a few experiences that have left a lasting impression on me.

🇮🇳
India
India, on my first solo trip, threw me straight into the deep end. Honestly, that first day was a bit of a shock. I felt completely lost, navigating unfamiliar cultural norms and, as a woman walking alone, I was constantly approached in a way that felt overwhelming and unsafe. Panic was starting to set in when a man named Ajay noticed my distress. He calmly came over and walked me all the way back to my hotel, making sure I was safe. That act of kindness shifted my entire perspective on India right then and there. There are nice people out there, no matter where you go.

Zimbabwe
My time in Zimbabwe was a journey into a different way of life, made unforgettable by the friends who opened their homes and hearts to me. Unfamiliar with their local customs, I was met with nothing but warmth and acceptance (thank you Patrick and your friends!). One experience, in particular, remains vivid. We visited a mutual friend who lived in a tiny flat—a single room that held her entire life, with the toilet located outside. Despite their limited means, she insisted on making me breakfast—a simple omelette and bread. In that humble setting, that simple meal, prepared with such care, became a powerful symbol of human connection. It's a moment that continues to inspire me.

Uzbekistan
Sometimes, the most meaningful souvenirs aren't bought, but given. In Uzbekistan, I found myself on the receiving end of such generosity, twice over. Inside a museum, a woman selling her handcrafted bracelets captivated me. Our conversation flowed easily, and before I knew it, she had given me one of her pieces—a simple yet profound act of kindness.

Days later, in the historic city of Bukhara, I stumbled upon three beautiful girls taking photos. I offered to take their pictures, and in that instant, a connection formed, transcending language barriers. As our paths diverged, they insisted I take one of their dresses, a gift as unexpected and beautiful as the city itself. These moments, unplanned and unscripted, are the true magic of travel.

Azerbaijan
It offered a different kind of connection. People there were so curious and welcoming. I'd be taking photos, and locals would stop, look, and try to start a conversation. One family explained that their children had never met anyone from overseas and asked if I'd speak to their child in English, as I looked foreign. Later, a local offered me some dessert. I'll admit, I was a bit hesitant at first—accepting food from strangers isn't always the best idea. But their thoughtfulness was so genuine that I couldn't refuse. We ended up enjoying the dessert together, a sweet moment of connection that perfectly reflected the warmth of the Azerbaijani people.

Qatar
And most recently, a mishap led to an unexpected act of kindness. My mum and I missed our connecting flight to Morocco—a stressful situation, to say the least. While I was fortunate enough to have my ticket covered due to a prior flight delay, my mother was faced with the daunting prospect of buying a new one. Initially, we encountered an attendant who offered little assistance. One attendant, after initially seeming unhelpful, eventually sorted things out for me, but another attendant, a Moroccan woman, went above and beyond (Thank you Chaimae). She empathised with my mum's situation (being an older traveller), and even though a new ticket was almost $950 AUD, she managed to get my mum a ticket with no additional cost. Chaimae's kindness, combined with her insider tips about travelling in Morocco, turned a stressful travel mishap into a truly heartwarming experience. It was a powerful reminder that a little compassion can go a long way.

My Perspective on Solo Travel

🥊
To challenge my fears and discover the good that awaits.

As a woman travelling solo, I'm familiar with the concerns. But my journeys have consistently shown me that the world is full of unexpected kindness. This is what drives me to explore the unfamiliar and it's everywhere. From a stranger's simple act of giving me their transport day pass, travel guide, to the surprise of a luxurious lounge upgrade or the welcome of an early hotel check-in at 7 am. And it's in the genuine connections with restaurant staff, sharing their knowledge and a complimentary treat. These moments, big and small, weave a rich tapestry of human connection, making solo travel an endlessly rewarding experience.

👍
Of course, safety is always a priority.

I make sure to take precautions, like dressing respectfully, being aware of my surroundings, and doing my research beforehand. But I've found that a little bit of effort goes a long way. Learning even a few basic phrases in the local language – "hello," "thank you," "please" – can make a huge difference. It shows respect and a genuine interest in the culture, and people often respond with even more warmth and generosity. I've also noticed that people are more willing to connect and share their culture when they see your genuine admiration and interest. Starting a conversation with kindness can open doors to incredible experiences and friendships.

💡
Some travelers warn against being too trusting or overly nice, as it may lead to scams or being taken advantage of as a tourist. While this can happen, I view it differently. If I end up spending a little more on local services or businesses because of their clever marketing or persuasion, I don’t mind—it’s part of the experience, and I admire their resourcefulness.

Finding Role Model: Being Kind

The purpose of my travels has shifted over time. For me, travel has evolved beyond simply seeing new places.; it's about the human connections I make, the lessons I learn, and the expanded perspective I gain. And in my journeys, I've been fortunate enough to meet some truly inspiring women.

As a woman in my late twenties, the privilege of travel is something I don't take lightly. But my journeys aren't about comparison. I've in fact found myself drawn to the stories of the women I meet, women who have, in many ways, become my guides and inspiration.

🤔
I often reflect on their lives and the choices they've made.

Some chose the path of early marriage and family, others are navigating life's journey solo, while others are deeply committed to their professional pursuits. But despite their different paths, they all share one remarkable quality: a genuine capacity for care. They care deeply about their own well-being and the well-being of those around them. They understand that happiness is not a comparative exercise, but a personal journey. It's about identifying your own values and nurturing the relationships that enrich your life. They've taught me that true fulfillment comes not from comparing ourselves to others, but from living authentically and cherishing the people and things we hold dear.

Conclusion: Embrace the Unexpected

Travelling has taught me:
Aiya, the world, despite its challenges, remains a beautiful and fascinating place to explore. So, next time you're planning a trip, consider stepping outside your comfort zone. Be open to the unexpected. And most importantly, don't be afraid to connect with the people you meet along the way. You might be surprised at the kindness you find ;)
